The law may not recognize them, but in the eyes of Facebook, all marriages are equally worthy of a status update. Shortly after Facebook’s co-founder Chris Hughes posted news of his marriage to longtime partner, Sean Eldridge, the social networking giant released new marriage icons for same-sex couples.
“While this may seem like a small step, the impact of these new cake topper icons goes far beyond their 30 pixels,” said GLAAD’s Allison Palmer in an email interview with VentureBeat.
Gay and lesbian couples can now declare their relationship on their timeline with icons that are different from those straight married couples use. Set in the Facebook blue, they depict two men and two women.
The marriage icons are the latest in a series of moves by Facebook to support its lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. Last year, the company added “in a civil union” and “in a domestic partnership” to user profiles. As a result, Facebook was the first social media company to be honored by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD).
